Siliguri, 23rd May: A youth was caught red-handed while attempting to commit theft in the Shantinagar Bowbazar area of Siliguri on Saturday, triggering tension in the locality.
According to information, the incident took place near a businessman’s shop where a godown is located adjacent to the store. While the shop owner and staff were busy serving customers, the godown was left unattended. Taking advantage of the situation, the accused reportedly entered the godown and tried to flee with a carton of raisins.
However, the shop owner noticed the act and raised an alarm. Hearing the commotion, local traders and residents rushed to the spot and caught the youth. The public then detained him and thrashed him before informing the police.
Ashighar Outpost police reached the spot soon after receiving information. During questioning, police recovered a toto key from the accused. He reportedly told police that another person was involved in the incident and that the toto did not belong to them.
Police have detained the youth and taken him to the police station for further interrogation. A search has also been launched for the toto and the second accused.
