Siliguri, 20th April: Amid the ongoing election atmosphere, a youth was arrested in Siliguri for allegedly roaming with a firearm. The arrest was made by plainclothes police from Matigara Police Station.
According to police sources, acting on a tip-off, a late-night operation was carried out in the Sishabari area of Matigara. During the operation, a youth found moving suspiciously on the road was intercepted and searched. Police recovered a firearm and one round of ammunition from his possession, following which he was taken into custody.
The arrested individual has been identified as Ujjwal Barman, a resident of the Matigara area. The accused was produced before the Siliguri court on Monday, where police sought his remand.
Police are currently investigating all possible angles, including whether there was any larger conspiracy behind carrying the firearm during the election period or if it is linked to illegal arms trade.
