Vegetable farmers in Rajganj stare at big losses amid COVID-19 pandemic

Rajganj, 16th June: The vegetable farmers of Rajganj Gajoldoba area are facing severe economic challenges amid the pandemic as they are being forced to sell their produce at a much lower price, leaving them with hardly any money to support their livelihoods.


As per the information, the residents of the aforementioned area highly depend on vegetable cultivation. Every season, a variety of vegetables are cultivated in several thousand hectares of land. However, this year, potatoes, pointed gourds, chilies, and many other vegetables have reportedly suffered losses. The products also could not be transported to other states due to the lockdown.

Pradip Roy, a farmer, stated that all vegetables have suffered immense losses this year. Although the yields of maize and nuts are pretty good, they were forced to sell it at much lower prices due to the prevailing situation.


Haradhan Das, another farmer, stated that due to heavy rains, farmlands have already become waterlogged. “Apart from running my family expenses, I am having a hard time repaying loans,” he added.
