Siliguri, 22nd August: The Government Railway Police (GRP) SOG team seized around 24.7 kg of cannabis from the Down Teesta-Torsa Express in Siliguri and arrested two passengers in connection with the alleged smuggling of the substance by train.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Somnath Saha (35), a resident of Nabadwip, and Rupali Roy (31), a resident of the Bhakti Nagar Police Station area.
According to police, the GRP SOG team launched an operation based on information about cannabis being transported by train. During a search of the AC A-1 coach of the Down Teesta-Torsa Express, two passengers were detained on suspicion.
Police subsequently searched two bags and a luggage bag in their possession and allegedly recovered a large quantity of cannabis. The seized cannabis weighed 24 kg 700 grams, with its market value estimated to be several lakh rupees.
According to the GRP, both accused had boarded the train at Dhupguri and were travelling towards Nabadwip. Police suspect they were travelling with the cannabis for alleged smuggling purposes.
The GRP has registered a case against both accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. NJP GRP produced the two arrested individuals before the Jalpaiguri court on Saturday and sought police remand.
