Siliguri, 21st May: A theft at the Gaudiya Math in the Deshbandhu Para area under Ward No. 29 of Siliguri Municipal Corporation has triggered concern in the locality after unidentified miscreants allegedly stole several religious items late Wednesday night.
According to sources, the incident took place around 2 a.m. when the accused targeted the Math and fled with nearly 30 brass Gopal idols along with bronze utensils used for puja rituals. The incident created panic among local residents and devotees in the area.
After receiving information about the incident, Ward No. 29 councillor Saradindu Chakraborty reached the spot and said such an incident had never occurred before. He termed the incident unfortunate and expressed confidence in the police investigation.
The councillor also alleged that the rising number of drug addicts in the locality could be linked to the incident.
Meanwhile, police from Siliguri Police Station reached the spot soon after being informed and have started an investigation into the theft case.
