Siliguri’s bar owner was arrested on charges of defrauding Rs 37 lakh

Rajganj, 15th January: Rajganj police arrested the owner of a bar in Siliguri on charges of defrauding Rs 37 lakh. The arrested accused has been identified as Pawan Das.


As per the information, in the year 2020, a retired headmaster of a primary school in Belakoba visited a shop in Hong Kong market in Siliguri to buy a Chinese doll for Rs 1 lakh. He paid a few thousand rupees in advance and asked to deliver the doll to his house. However, he was later informed over the phone that the doll was seized by the Ambari outpost police on the way.

Following this, a person posing as Ambari outpost police officer threatened to arrest the said man. It has been alleged that a total of 37 lakh rupees was extracted from the teacher after threatening him in various ways.


The victim further complained that a large sum of money was demanded from him to settle the matter. He then lodged a written complaint at Rajganj police station in November. Based on the allegations, the police launched investigations and found out that the money had been deposited in the bank accounts of Pawan Das, a bar owner in Siliguri, and several others.

On Friday night, the Police under the leadership of SI of Rajganj Police Station Mohammad Mansuruddin arrested Pawan Das. A search is being conducted to nab the other accused individuals.

The arrested accused was sent to Jalpaiguri court on Saturday. Police are investigating the whole incident.
