Siliguri, 28th August: Pradhan Nagar Police have arrested a man after a young woman alleged that he had a relationship with her when she was a minor, promised to marry her and later refused to marry her. Police have registered a case against the accused under the POCSO Act.
The accused has been identified as Shubham Gupta and was produced before the Siliguri court on Friday.
According to the complaint, the woman alleged that the accused entered into a relationship with her when she was a minor after promising to marry her. She became pregnant and gave birth to a child in January 2024. According to her allegation, the accused subsequently distanced himself from her and refused to marry her or acknowledge the child.
The woman further alleged that the accused later sent her and the child to Delhi but failed to fulfil his promise after they reached there. After struggling for nearly two years, she returned to Siliguri with her child on August 15 and contacted the accused again.
Following the alleged refusal, she approached Pradhan Nagar Police Station and lodged a complaint. Police subsequently arrested Shubham Gupta and launched an investigation.
According to police sources, the process of conducting DNA tests of the child and the accused will be initiated. Police have also begun the process of arranging support through an NGO for the safety and care of the mother and child.
