Siliguri woman ‘set afire’ case: Victim succumbs to injuries at the hospital, two accused arrested

Siliguri, 30 December: A woman from Siliguri undergoing treatment succumbed to her injuries after battling for life at the hospital. The death of the victim Priyanka Singha Roy, left the family in grief and baffled.


It has to be noted that, on December 25, Priyanka was allegedly set afire by her husband and brother-in-law in Siliguri. The distressing incident brought waves of sensation across the city.

Earlier, about four months ago, Priyanka was married to Jayanta Singha Roy, a resident of Naresh More. Following the marriage, Priyanka was allegedly subjected to physical and mental torture over dowry. The atrocities extended further and Priyanka was allegedly set on fire after sprinkling fuel on her by her husband and brother-in-law, on Sunday. Subsequently, the woman was admitted to Siliguri District Hospital with severe burn injuries. Later, as Priyanka’s health deteriorated, she was shifted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH).


Priyanka lost her battle for life after four days of treatment at NBMCH. On Friday, an atmosphere of mourning prevailed after her deceased body was brought to her maternal home for cremation. In this regard, Priyanka’s parents demanded stringent punishment for her accused husband and brother-in-law.

On the other hand, upon receiving the complaint, Ashighar Outpost police arrested the accused husband Jayanta Singha Roy, and brother-in-law Papai Singha Roy. At present, both accused are in judicial custody, while, the police are engaged in a detailed investigation of the entire incident.
