Siliguri still not taking lockdown seriously, Central government’s letter worry SMC Mayor

Siliguri, 13th April: The Central Government in a letter to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation expressed concern over the Siliguri public violating the lockdown protocols imposed to contain the spread of the deadly virus.

During a press conference on Monday, Mayor Ashok Bhattacharya stated that despite repeated reminders to stay home and not to loiter unnecessarily, there have been complaints of people gathering at various corners around the city deliberately violating the lockdown. Several people are also spotted buying commodities in the market area without maintaining social distance.

Commenting on the Central Government’s letter, Bhattacharya stated that he has asked the Commissioner of Police to look into the matter as soon as possible.

Apart from this, the Mayor stated that a letter to the state government seeking permission to collect revenue will also be forwarded. The revenue is the main source for the salaries of SMC’s employees and the collection has been closed for the past one month. Mayor maintained that the collection will be conducted by following government guidelines or through online procedures.
