Siliguri, 25 August: The Special Operations Group (SOG) of Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested two women and seized around 17 kg of cannabis from the Down Rani Kamalapati Express at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station in Siliguri.
The arrested women have been identified as Phulmala Deb Barma (20) and Ria Deb Barma (26), both residents of Tripura.
According to police sources, the NJP GRP SOG team received information that cannabis was being smuggled on the Down Rani Kamalapati Express. Acting on the tip-off, GRP SOG personnel, along with NJP police officers, conducted a search of the train’s AC B-2 coach.
During the operation, the two women were detained on suspicion. Police subsequently searched their trolley bag and backpack, from which approximately 17 kg of cannabis was recovered.
The accused women were arrested in connection with the seizure and produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Tuesday. The GRP has launched an investigation to determine the source of the cannabis and its intended destination.
