Questions raised over maintenance and beautification of Siliguri Gate

Siliguri, 25th May: Siliguri Gate, constructed in 2017 at the entry point of the city under the initiative of the North Bengal Development Department, has once again come under discussion over allegations of poor maintenance and lack of proper beautification.

At the time of its construction, the administration had claimed that the gate would enhance the identity and aesthetic appeal of the city. However, within a few years, questions are now being raised over the effectiveness and quality of the project.

Locals allege that crores of rupees were spent on constructing the Siliguri Gate, but the structure lacks attractive design elements and adequate beautification. Many residents claim that the original purpose of showcasing the city’s identity has only been partially fulfilled.

Residents further stated that during the initial years, decorative lighting and light displays used to illuminate the gate at night, but those features are now mostly inactive. As a result, the structure has reportedly lost much of its visual appeal after dark.

Thousands of residents and tourists pass through the route every day. Many feel that the landmark, built as a gateway to Northeast India, is suffering from a lack of proper maintenance and development.

The issue has now sparked fresh debate among locals, with some questioning whether the project was genuinely aimed at highlighting the pride of North Bengal or primarily promoted as an administrative achievement.
