Siliguri, 09th May: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has honoured senior BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar, following which celebrations broke out at his residence in the Dabgram area of Siliguri.
According to family sources, Makhanlal Sarkar’s political journey began with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), after which he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 1981, during the time of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he helped form the Darjeeling district BJP committee and also served as its president.
A businessman by profession, he played a key role in strengthening the party organisation across several areas of North Bengal, including Khalpara and Kharibari. He was also considered a close associate of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
His elder son Manik Sarkar said that his father was deeply influenced by BJP ideology since his association with the RSS and continued to guide party workers even after laying a strong foundation for the party in North Bengal. The honour by the Prime Minister has been described by the family as a moment of pride.
