Siliguri, 04th July: The administration has proposed developing the mela ground of Kanchenjunga Stadium into a dedicated parking zone to address long-standing traffic congestion along Bidhan Road, one of the city’s busiest commercial stretches.
On Saturday, the proposed site was inspected by Tourism Minister and Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh along with senior traffic police officials, including the DCP (Traffic), personnel from the traffic department, and representatives of the municipal corporation.
During the inspection, officials reviewed key aspects of the project including vehicle entry and exit points, internal circulation planning, security arrangements, and overall operational management of the proposed parking facility.
According to officials, once developed, the parking zone at Kanchenjunga Stadium fair ground will be able to accommodate several hundred two-wheelers and four-wheelers simultaneously. The municipal corporation is expected to implement a regulated parking system with fixed charges for users.
The initiative is expected to significantly reduce illegal roadside parking along Bidhan Road, which has been a major cause of daily traffic congestion in the area.
The move is also likely to benefit shoppers visiting major commercial hubs such as Bidhan Market and Hong Kong Market, as visitors from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Sikkim often face severe parking shortages.
Officials stated that the project, once operational, will improve traffic flow in one of Siliguri’s most congested commercial corridors. The Minister reportedly stressed the need for swift execution of the plan during the inspection.
