One arrested for wildlife smuggling in Siliguri

Rajganj, 24th January: Two tortoises were rescued by the forest workers of Belakoba Range, on Monday. A person identified as Bittu Das was arrested in the incident. He is a resident of the Bharibasa area adjacent to Siliguri.


Acting on a tip-off, the forest workers under the leadership of Belakoba Ranger Sanjay Dutta raided a supermarket in Siliguri and rescued the tortoises.

According to the Belakoba Range Office, the smugglers brought the turtles from different places to various markets in the city for trade. The tortoises rescued at the Siliguri supermarket on Monday were brought from Bihar. One person has been arrested in the incident. He will be sent to Jalpaiguri court on Tuesday.
