No bridge, No vote: Villagers of Khalsi boycott vote

Hemtabad, 22nd April: Despite several appeals regarding the construction of a proper bridge over the river at Rajganj enclosed village Khalsi area, no heed was paid to the people’s demand. As a result, the villagers decided to boycott the election of booth number 129 / 129A, 1098 of Sherpur Linepara of Hemtabad Assembly.

The Kulik River flows through the said area and has separated several villages including Khalsi, Mehendigram, Sherpur, South Sherpur, Khoksa. People of the said areas use a make-shift bridge to cross the river but due to the increase in water level amid the rainy season, people are compelled to travel a considerable distance to Raiganj city.

Reportedly, leaders of various political parties at every election promised to build the bridge after assembly elections. However, the villagers alleged that no one took the initiative to construct the bridge after the election was over. Regarding this reason, the villagers have decided to boycott the voting for this year. They demanded saying “pull de, vote le” (give us a bridge and we will cast the vote).
