Siliguri, 25th July: NJP Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Special Operation Group (SOG) conducted a joint operation and arrested two alleged smugglers with 159 bottles of banned cough syrup from the Kanchanjungha Express train.
The arrested persons have been identified as Mohammad Sosaj and Nahimuddin, both residents of Tripura.
According to police sources, based on information received, a special operation was conducted on Friday night in the general coach of the (UP) Kanchanjungha Express stationed at Platform No. 03 of NJP Railway Station.
During the search, two suspicious passengers were detained. Police recovered 159 bottles of banned cough syrup packed inside cartons from two trolley bags and two backpacks allegedly belonging to them.
During the preliminary investigation, police found that the two accused had boarded the train from Kolkata and were allegedly travelling towards Tripura.
According to GRP officials, the seized cough syrup is estimated to be worth several lakhs of rupees. A case has been registered against the accused under the NDPS Act, and an investigation has been initiated.
The two accused were produced before the Jalpaiguri court, where police sought their custody for further investigation.
