MP Raju Bista urges CM Biren Singh to develop, preserve Gorkha culture, language, and history in Manipur

Darjeeling MP Raju Bista met the Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh in Delhi, on Saturday. During the meeting, Bista spoke on various issues concerning the development and economic progress of the region.


He also urged the CM for the need to develop and preserve the unique Gorkha culture, language, and history in Manipur.


The Indian Gorkhas are spread across different parts of the country including Manipur. The MP emphasized that over the years, the Gorkhas have significantly contributed in the nation-building process of modern Manipur – as soldiers, graziers, agricultural, workers and the distinct culture and traditions of the Gorkhas have enriched the cultural diversity of the state.

Both Manipuri and Gorkha/Nepali language were recognized under the VIIIth Schedule of our Constitution the same day, on 20th August 1992.

Shining light on the interconnected culture and history MP Raju Bista stated that he has requested the government of Manipur to constitute an autonomous body for the conservation and promotion of Gorkha culture, language and community in Manipur.

“This will go a long way in providing opportunities for Gorkha writers, students, and scholars to promote our shared heritage in art, culture, and literature in the states and will go a long way in strengthening peoples connect to one another,” he wrote on social media.

The MP stated that he is hopeful that the government of Manipur will take a considerate view of his requests and initiate steps towards recognizing the history and culture of the Gorkhas of Manipur.
