Siliguri, 16th September: A memorandum was issued to the Siliguri SDO on behalf of the Mechi Krishi Jamin Bachao Committee with a demand to provide land leases to the farmers.
The committee members said that several years ago, the state government acquired 105 acres of land near the Mechi River in Naxalbari to build a Gorkha Training Centre. However, due to the agitation of the farmers in this regard, the state government started the construction work on only 30 acres of land.
Meanwhile, at present, the farmers are cultivating the vacant lands without any land lease. They have been protesting for the last two years to get the lease but to no avail. A memorandum was handed over today to the Siliguri SDO in this regard.
