Maynaguri girl dies by self immolation over threat to withdraw rape attempt complaint, family demands CBI inquiry

Siliguri, 25th April: A minor from Maynaguri succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of Monday while undergoing treatment at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. Reportedly, the girl set herself on fire after she was allegedly threatened to withdraw a police complaint regarding a rape attempt on her earlier this year.

It is to be noted, in February, a resident of the same area allegedly tried to rape the minor when she was alone at her house. When the girl screamed for help, the man fled away from the spot. Later, the victim’s family lodged a complaint against the man at the police station. Although the accused was arrested, he got out on bail.

According to the victim’s family, a few days ago, the accused came to the minor’s house and threatened her to withdraw the complaint or else she will be raped and her family murdered. Shaken up by the threat, the girl set herself on fire and attempted suicide. She was rescued and was undergoing treatment at the NBMCH for several days. She died on Monday morning during treatment. Her family has demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter. Locals have also demanded stringent action against the accused. Meanwhile, police have arrested several people in connection with the incident.
