Siliguri, 03rd July: Police have arrested three persons in connection with allegations of illegal land encroachment and fraudulent sale of land in Matigara area.
According to police sources, complaints had been received for a long time regarding land mafias forcibly occupying land and selling it illegally, creating fear among local residents over property transactions.
The arrested accused have been identified as Rinku Singh, Rajesh Oraon and Pankaj Tamang. They were arrested from the Matigara and Devidanga areas during a special drive against illegal land activities.
Police claimed that the accused were attempting to illegally sell a plot in the Patharghata area of Matigara. Earlier, in the same case, the wife of a land mafia accused had also been arrested.
The matter has also created political buzz. Recently, MP Raju Bista had directed police and administration to take strict action against land mafias.
The accused were produced before the Siliguri court on Friday, and further investigation is underway.
