INTTUC submitted a memorandum to railway officer demanding rehabilitation of hawkers

Siliguri, 11th June: NJP Railway Station, the largest railway station in Northeast India, is being refurbished. For the first phase, the Railway Department has issued a notice to remove several settlements and shops in the surrounding area in order to widen the boundary of the station. The decision of the railway has created a stir amongst hawkers and traders of the said area.


Following this, the NJP wing of the Trinamool’s trade union INTTUC and Jatiyatabadi Railway Hawker’s Union raised the demand for early rehabilitation of all hawkers and vendors. A rally was conducted from the party office of INTTUC to the ADRM office today. The rally was later intervened by Railway Police. Later, due to the absence of ADRM, the members submitted the memorandum to the Railway Officer-in-Charge. 

The District President of organization, Nirjal Dey stated that they support the Railways’ decision to refurbished the station however, they do not want the livelihood of about 10 thousand hawkers and local vendors to be disrupted. The Trinamool’s trade union INTTUC and Jatiyatabadi Railway Hawker’s Union demanded immediate rehabilitation regarding the issue. They also warned to launch a massive agitation if their demands are not met.
