Siliguri, 16th April: A suspected case of an infant’s body going missing from a grave at a burial ground under Bhakti Nagar police station area has triggered panic and unrest in Siliguri.
The incident occurred at the burial ground near the Mahananda River in Prakash Nagar, where locals and family members raised an alarm after noticing signs of disturbance at the grave.
According to reports, the infant, a two-and-a-half-month-old baby from BBD Colony under Ward No. 02, had died about a month ago and was buried at the site. The family had been visiting the grave regularly.
On Thursday morning, when relatives visited the site, they found clear signs of tampering and alleged that the body may have been removed from the grave. Following the news, a large crowd gathered at the spot, creating tension in the area.
Police from Bhakti Nagar station reached the location and brought the situation under control, while security was tightened.
The family has demanded excavation of the grave to ascertain the truth. Officials have informed the BDO, and the exhumation process is expected to be carried out in the presence of a magistrate.
Meanwhile, rumours of black magic and occult practices have also surfaced in the locality. Police have detained a suspected tantric for questioning and an investigation is underway.
