Siliguri, 25th July: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) demolished several illegal shops constructed on a designated parking area of a residential complex in Siliguri’s Ward No. 27 at Deshbandhu Para on Saturday.
According to allegations, the promoter of the residential complex had constructed multiple shops on the space earmarked for parking several years ago and later sold them to different individuals. Over time, various businesses, including a salon, began operating from the shops.
The civic body initiated an investigation after receiving a written complaint regarding the alleged encroachment. Following a preliminary inquiry, the allegations were found to be true and notices were served to the concerned parties.
As the illegal structures were not removed within the stipulated period, SMC officials carried out a demolition drive and razed the shops on Saturday.
People who had purchased the shops or garages expressed resentment during the demolition, claiming they had paid money for the properties. They also demanded action against the promoter, alleging that they had been misled.
