Hill-bound taxis remain off-roads demanding fare hike

Siliguri, 29th November: Taxi drivers want the government to hike car and taxi fares to cope with the situation arising out of a steep hike in petrol-diesel prices.

Drivers from the hills have been demanding an increase in fares for a long time. As their demands have not been met till now, vehicles from Siliguri to Darjeeling, Kurseong, and Kalimpong are suspended today. Taxi service was also closed from NJP station and Junction.

However, many drivers’ organizations did not support the decision. The tour operators said that the tourism business will suffer due to the sudden closure of transport services during the holiday season.
