Siliguri, 23rd August: An e-rickshaw driver was arrested with around 300 grams of brown sugar in Siliguri’s Nivedita Road area. The arrested accused has been identified as Ratan Roy, a resident of Baghajatin Colony in Ward No. 45 of Siliguri.
The operation was jointly conducted by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police and Pradhan Nagar Police. Acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted a search operation and intercepted an e-rickshaw on suspicion.
During the search, police recovered a packet containing around 300 grams of brown sugar concealed beneath the seat of the vehicle. The driver was subsequently taken into custody.
Police claimed that Roy had previously been arrested in connection with brown sugar smuggling around four years ago and had served a lengthy prison sentence. After his release, he had started working as an e-rickshaw driver.
A case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He will be produced before the Siliguri Court on Monday. The investigation into the matter is underway.
