Grieving mother elephant separated from her dead calf after 3 days in Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri, 30th May: The Forest personnel of Binnaguri Wildlife Squad recovered the carcass of an elephant calf from the forest between Red Bank and Diana Tea Garden on Monday morning. 
Reportedly, on Friday, the elephant calf died in the Ambari Tea Garden area under Banarhat block. The forest workers, who came to recover the deceased calf, failed due to the outrage of the mother elephant. After the incident, the mother elephant kept roaming in many tea gardens carrying the dead calf.
The mother elephant latched herself to her calf and did not move a foot away from it. Forest officials and locals were emotionally invested after witnessing such a heartbreaking scene. Finally, on Monday morning, the grieving mother left her baby calf and stepped some distance away from it. Acting promptly, the forest officials recovered the calf and sent it for autopsy. They maintained that the exact cause of death will be known after the post-mortem reports arrive.
