Green signal to GTA Election? Calcutta High Court to hear plea challenging GTA elections on June 24

Kolkata, 23rd June: The Calcutta High Court today ruled that the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) polls would be held on June 26 as per the pre-arranged schedule without any delay. Amid the speculation over the revocation of GTA election, the court on the much anticipated June 23 hearing said that it is not possible to cancel the polls now as election officials have already casted ballots for the same. Nonetheless, the matter will be heard by the Calcutta High Court again on June 24 after which a final verdict is expected to be issued.
It is to be noted, the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) has filed two petitions challenging the legality of GTA, the other seeking a stay on the publication of GTA elections on June 26. The High Court had heard the petition on Tuesday and had directed the centre and the state governments to file affidavits on their stand on the GTA polls, which was looked into today.
