Government initiative helps register sex workers in voter list in Siliguri

Siliguri, 23rd November: In a significant step toward inclusivity, the names of around 150 sex workers have been successfully registered in the voter list at Shamsia High Madrasah School through a government program in Siliguri.

As per reports, sex workers had been striving for years to get their names registered in the voter list but faced numerous challenges that hindered the process. This time, a dedicated government initiative has facilitated the inclusion of their names. The program was attended by Jalpaiguri Divisional Commissioner Anup Kumar Agarwal, the SDO, and other officials on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Jalpaiguri Divisional Commissioner Anup Kumar Agarwal highlighted that such programs are organized annually. He also mentioned that similar special camps are being conducted to assist members of the third gender and homeless individuals in registering their names in the voter list.

The sex workers expressed happiness over finally being able to register this time. They mentioned that the process required various documents, which they did not have until now, preventing them from registering earlier. However, they are pleased with this initiative by the government.
