Felling of trees rampant from Cheriakhari’s social forestry in Rajganj

Rajganj, 08th December: Tension grips the Cheriakhari area in Rajganj due to the ongoing issue of rampant felling of trees in the social forestry of the area.

As per reports, large-scale social forestry has been established along the Karatoa River in Cheriakhari of the Rajganj block, with the assistance of the forest department. Every year on the 27th of Magh in the Bengali calendar, the Kshatriya or Upanayan Diwas is observed around the woodland. During the occasion, several people from the country and beyond gather in the area. However, for some days, smugglers have been felling trees in the forest and damaging the social forestry and ecology.

In this regard, a resident Mohammad Hasibul expressed that the trees in the forestry are chopped off regularly, causing irreparable environmental damage. The matter has been reported to the forest department.

Meanwhile, Rajganj BDO Prashant Barman cautioned immediate action against damaging government property. He further asserted that the illegal activity would be controlled with the help of the police administration.
