Excise Department left baffled by unique method of smuggling cannabis in a train

Siliguri, 16th January: A baffling case of peddlers uniquely smuggling cannabis in the Rani Kamlapati special train surfaced after which the Excise Department conducted a raid.


Reportedly, the Excise Department searched New Cooch Behar station after receiving a tip-off. When the train approached NJP station, a huge quantity of cannabis was recovered from a hidden compartment near the water tank in the toilet of the S5 coach. Packets of cannabis were kept instead of the water. However, no one has been arrested in the said incident. The weight of the recovered cannabis is said to be more than 40 kg whose estimated market value is Rs 6-7 lakhs rupees. 

In this regard, Additional Excise Commissioner of Jalpaiguri Division Sujit Das said that the team of Alipurduar Division of Excise Department conducted a search after receiving a tip-off about the cannabis that was being smuggled from Tripura in the train by making a hidden compartment. Police are further investigating the matter.
