Duo arrested with heroin and narcotic tablets worth Rs 3 crore in Siliguri

Siliguri, 01st June: The team of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), acting on a tip-off, arrested two persons with a huge quantity of heroin and narcotic tablets. The accused have been identified as MD Riazuddin (42) of Manipur and Abdul Rashid (53) of Assam.
Reportedly, the DRI team spotted two men wandering at the Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand. Based on suspicion, the team apprehended the duo and searched them. 550 grams of heroin and 10 thousand pieces of intoxicant (Mentha Amphetamine) tablets were recovered from their bag and the duo was taken into custody for interrogation.
During interrogation, the DRI learned that the drugs had been brought in from Myanmar and the two men had come to Siliguri from Assam through a travel agency. They were allegedly on their way to Kaliachak in Malda. Apart from the drugs, a world map with some markings and another map of a ship were found in their possession. Considering this, the officials have assumed that this might be a case of an international drugs racket.
The DRI registered a case under the NDPS Act and presented the accused in the Siliguri court today. They will be kept in judicial custody for 14 days for further investigation.
In this regard, DRI’s advocate maintained that the team succeeded in stopping an international smuggling of drugs where 550 grams of heroin and 10 thousand pieces of intoxicant tablets have been seized. The market value of the seized drug has been estimated at Rs 3 crore 26 thousand 500. Both the accused are suspected to be associated with an international drug smuggling gang.
