DRI arrests two women from NJP station with gold biscuits worth over Rs 1 crore

Siliguri, 28th April: In another crackdown against gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested two women from NJP Railway Station who were trying to smuggle 2.656 kilos of gold worth Rs 1 crore 31 lakh. The duo has been identified as Leela Goswami and Moushumi Adhikari. Both are residents of North 24 Parganas.


Reportedly, acting on a tip-off, the DRI team launched an operation at the NJP railway station on Wednesday and searched the Rajdhani Express standing at the platform. The two women were deboarded from the train and searched based on suspicion. During the search, 16 pieces of gold biscuits were recovered from pairs of shoes hidden inside their luggage bags. The duo was arrested under the Customs Act 1962 after they failed to produce valid documents for the seized gold. The women were produced in Siliguri court today and have been kept in judicial custody for 14 days.
