DRI arrest two with over 900 grams of gold in Siliguri

Siliguri, 04th July: Acting on a tip-off, a team of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested two gold smugglers identified as Shahadat Hussain (51) of Jharkhand and Surendra Kumar Shah (59) a resident of Dinbazar Jalpaiguri.


Reportedly, the DRI received information regarding the smuggling of gold into Patna via Siliguri through the Indo-Bangladesh border. Acting promptly, the team apprehended Shahadat Hussain at the NBSTC Junction bus stand based on suspicion. Two biscuits of gold were recovered from his bag and was immediately taken into custody.

During interrogation, Shahadat confessed that he had reached Siliguri to deliver the gold biscuits to Surendra Kumar Shah, a resident of Jalpaiguri Dinbazar. Based on his statement, the DRI arrested Surendra from the said location and brought him to Siliguri last night. While questioning, he confessed that Shahadat had come to deliver him gold. He further added that in exchange for the gold, he was to receive a payment of Rs 32 lakh and was assigned to smuggle the gold to Patna.


DRI recovered a total of two gold biscuits weighing 933 grams and 03 mobile phones. Furthermore, cash amounting to Rs 32 lakh 29 thousand 500 was recovered from Surendra Kumar Shah’s possession. The market value of the recovered gold is estimated to be around Rs 48 lakh 70 thousand 447.

Shahadat Hussain and Surendra Kumar Sah were presented in the Siliguri court today. DRI is probing the entire matter.
