Darjeeling Police lodged a case against a woman for spreading Coronavirus rumors on social media

Darjeeling, 12th March: As the world grapples with the Coronavirus outbreak, misleading information about the virus is also spreading. After false claims of a hotel guard, infected with Coronavirus (COVID-19), being admitted in one of the town’s nursing home surfaced, the nursing home authorities along with the hotel management and the police quickly shut down the rumors.


In this context, a case has been lodged against a woman at Darjeeling’s Police station following a voice message which went viral on the social media platforms, Facebook and Whatsapp. The voice message stated that a coronavirus patient, who is a guard in a well-known hotel of Darjeeling, was admitted to one of the town’s nursing home. The authorities claimed that the message was fake with no such cases have been found in Darjeeling, yet.

The police also maintained that a dedicated team has been formed to monitor such false messages and an investigation was being conducted to search for the people spreading such rumors. The police further stated that actions against such people can be taken through relevant sections under the IPC and the IT Act. The police also appealed to the people to not believe such rumors and have launched an investigation into the incident.
