Siliguri, 25th July: Tension erupted at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) after eggs were allegedly thrown at some workers associated with the Uttar Banga Seva Bharati Patient Assistance Centre.
According to reports, allegations of corruption and recruitment of workers by allegedly using the name of the contractual workers’ union were levelled against Pratima Chakraborty, president of the contractual workers’ union at NBMCH. The allegations reportedly led to growing resentment among a section of workers.
On Saturday, some protesting workers and local people allegedly threw eggs targeting Pratima Chakraborty. Uttar Banga Seva Bharati member Kartik Bhakta was also allegedly targeted with eggs during the incident.
The protesters alleged that irregularities and corruption had been continuing for a long time by using the name of the union. They demanded strict action against those responsible.
Reacting to the incident, Pratima Chakraborty alleged that a few women confronted her while she was on duty. She claimed that she was physically harassed and assaulted along with being hit by eggs. She stated that she would file a complaint at the Medical Outpost and seek legal action against those involved.
Following the incident, hospital authorities and police reached the spot to bring the situation under control. Administrative sources said that the allegations would be verified and necessary action would be taken accordingly.
