Biden – Xi talks: Biden expresses ‘concerns’ over human rights situation in Tibet

U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping held in a virtual meeting at the White House on Monday evening. During the three-hour call, Biden pressed his Chinese counterpart on Beijing’s human rights practices. He further spoke on the human rights situations in Tibet, Hong Kong and Xinjiang, which China often regards as its “domestic concern” even though it faces frequent objection by foreign rights groups.

The two Presidents discussed North Korea, Afghanistan, Iran, global energy markets, trade and competition, climate, military issues, the pandemic and other areas where they frequently disagree. However, the talks appeared to yield no immediate outcomes.

Meanwhile, several activists organized a rally and vigil in front of the White House to call on US President Biden to support human rights in the talks with Xi Jinping.
