Darjeeling, 09th January: The Central Committee meeting of Himalayan Plantation Workers Union (HPWU) was held at Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) Central Office in Darjeeling on Sunday. The meeting was chaired by GNLF Central Committee Vice-Chairman Kishor Gurung and conducted by the secretary of the organization Dhiraj Rai.

Following the state’s Covid restrictions, only the members of the Central Committee were present in the meeting. Apart from Gurung and Rai, the party’s Central Committee member Biren Lama, General Secretary S. K. Lama and party media cell in-charge Dinesh Sampang were also present. The organization unanimously elected BK Rai as the president of HPWU, while Pranay Rai was appointed as the office secretary.

It is to be noted, retired teacher B. K. Rai played a key role in the 1986 Gorkhaland movement and worked closely with the party’s founding president, Subash Ghising. In the past, Rai worked for the rights and interests of the workers as the Secretary General of HPWU and is currently a member of the GNLF Central Committee.

Addressing the gathering after being elected as the president of HPWU, B. K. Rai said that discipline plays a vital role while running an organization. “HPWU is and will continue to work for the rights and interests of workers,” Rai further added. He also extended his gratitude towards the party’s president Man Ghising and the HPWU Central Committee for entrusting him with the post.
