Alternative weather bridge over Balasan collapses due to heavy rain

Siliguri, 20th June: Water level of Balasan River increased significantly after heavy rain and storm lashed Siliguri on Sunday night. The 44 meters long weather bridge, built as an alternative route to the Balasan bridge, crumbled and was washed away.

It is to be noted, heavy rainfall over the past seven days was gradually damaging parts of the Weather Bridge. Despite being repaired by the PWD engineers, the bridge could not survive the strong currents of the river.

Reportedly, in October last year, the No. 03 pillar of Balasan Bridge was damaged due to heavy rain. Later, the PWD had constructed the Weather Bridge as an alternative route over the river to reduce the pressure on the Bailey Bridge built over Balasan. The Weather Bridge was constructed at a total cost of 70 lakh rupees.
