Action should be taken against ones getting backhander to allow people to settle on Mahananda riverbanks: Shankar Ghosh

Siliguri, 03rd December: A few days ago, according to the guidelines of the Green Tribunal, Siliguri Municipal Corporation demolished illegal constructions in the South Baghajatin Colony area of Ward No. 02 and several riverbank areas of Gurung Busty of Ward No. 03. Ever since the event, around 43 families have become homeless and are being forced to spend the night out in the open.

Meanwhile, the incident has stirred up the political arena as well. Siliguri BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh, today through a press conference, highly condemned SMC’s campaign launched to free the Mahananda river bank of encroachment and called it completely immoral. He said that action should rather be taken against the local leaders who take bribes to allow people to settle on the banks of Mahananda River and government land.

Furthermore, the MLA questioned how the electricity and water supply were being provided to those people if they were residing in the area illegally. Asserting that the BJP never supports any illegal occupation, the MLA stated that the real culprits of Mahananda riverbank encroachment should be punished.
