Wild elephant goes on a rampage in Dooars, several houses destroyed

Jalpaiguri, 06th March: The terror of elephants continues in the Sakoya Jhora No. 1 Gram Panchayat area under the Banarhat police station of Dooars.


Likewise, on Friday night, a wild elephant came out of the Moraghat Forest and entered the Gairkata-Nathua road area. The elephant barged into the house of a tea worker, Santoram Oraon, and wreaked havoc.


Later, the elephant entered the labour locality of the Hindupara division of Gairkata tea garden and crushed a house. Karthik Nag injured himself while trying to save his life. The other family member managed to escape safely. The elephant wandered in the area for a few hours and then went towards the forest.

Tea workers are troubled and frightened by the frequent attacks of elephants in the locality. Residents have demanded compensation from the forest department. In the matter, Raj Kumar Paul, Ranger of Moraghat Range, said that the affected families will be compensated as per the rules of the forest department if they apply for the same.
