Siliguri: Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh raises concern over trend of selective participation in school Independence Day celebrations

Siliguri, 15th August: West Bengal Tourism Minister and Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh raised concern over a trend in some schools regarding the participation of students in Independence Day celebrations.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Ghosh alleged that in some educational institutions, students from certain classes were being invited to participate in Independence Day programmes, while students from other classes were reportedly given a holiday.

Ghosh said students learn various values and lessons from educational institutions from an early age. He said such a practice on an important national occasion like Independence Day could send a wrong message to students.

According to Ghosh, the matter has come to his notice and complaints will be lodged with the concerned authorities. He said action could be taken against the schools concerned if required.

The Tourism Minister also said educational institutions should ensure that such a practice does not continue in the future and that all students receive the same message on an occasion of national importance.
