Siliguri, 26th April: Two individuals have been arrested in connection with a mob assault that led to the death of a man over suspicion of cattle theft in Uttar Ektiasal Pipeline area of Siliguri. Forensic team visited the scene on Sunday to assist in the ongoing investigation.
According to reports, the deceased has been identified as Safiqul Islam, while the injured individual is Rafiqul Haque. Both were residents of Chopra and had been living in a rented house in Siliguri for the past three years, working as daily wage labourers.
Sources stated that on Saturday morning, the two men had left for work as part of their daily routine when they were allegedly detained by local residents on suspicion of cattle theft. They were then subjected to a severe physical assault by a mob.
Both victims sustained critical injuries and were later taken to a hospital, where Safiqul Islam was declared dead by doctors. Following the incident, the family of the deceased lodged a formal complaint at the police station.
During the investigation, forensic officials collected samples from the scene in the presence of personnel from Ashighar Outpost, Bhaktinagar Police Station, and central forces.
Police sources revealed that CCTV footage from the area was examined, which helped identify the accused. Two individuals, identified as Bhajan Roy and Sanjay Barman, have been arrested in connection with the case.
The arrested individuals were produced before the Jalpaiguri Court on Sunday. Police have initiated a detailed investigation to uncover all aspects of the incident.
