Siliguri, 02nd August: A driver was allegedly assaulted and robbed after giving a lift to a youth in the Matigara police station area. Police have arrested two accused in connection with the incident, while a search is underway to nab the remaining members of the gang.
According to reports, Vishal Mahato, a Tata Ace driver, was returning home late at night on 31st July when a youth sought a lift from Jalpai More to Ramghat. After reaching a deserted area under the Matigara police station limits, three other youths allegedly joined him and attacked the driver.
The accused allegedly assaulted Mahato, snatched his mobile phone and forced him to transfer around ₹4,100 through three online transactions before fleeing the spot.
The victim lodged a complaint at Matigara Police Station on 1st August. Acting on the complaint, police arrested two accused, identified as Dhruv Sahni (21) and Abhinandan Roy (22), on Saturday night.
The duo was produced before a Siliguri court on Sunday, which remanded them to three days of police custody.
According to police, the gang allegedly targeted motorists by seeking lifts at night and then taking them to secluded locations to rob them. Efforts are underway to trace the remaining accused, and further investigation into the case is ongoing.
