Think twice before polluting! Siliguri Municipal Corporation warns of strict action against river dumping

Siliguri, 01st June: In a significant move, the Siliguri Municipal Council, under its initiative to make the city free from plastic, decided to implement strict measures to achieve the set goals. In this regard, Siliguri Mayor Goutam Deb today held a meeting at the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC), with the administrative officials. The meeting was also attended by police officials, the SDO, and other officeholders of various departments.


According to reports, the meeting was undertaken to discuss the prospects of making the city green and plastic-free. Speaking after the meeting, Mayor Goutam Deb said that in view of the upcoming World Environment Day, several initiatives have already been undertaken to make the city eco-friendly. He added that Fuleswari and Subhash Pally markets will be made plastic-free markets in the coming days by imposing a complete ban on the use of plastic in both these markets.

Additionally, the Mayor revealed the greater plan of the SMC towards making all the markets of the city free of plastic. However, he admitted that since it is a huge task, it will require time and will be done gradually. According to the Mayor, upon successful implementation in the market, the larger plan of making the entire city plastic free can be achieved. Has further said that to meet the goals successfully, awareness campaigns will be undertaken using posters and placards. In addition, legal action will also be taken against defaulters.
