Theft at vacant house in Matigara, accused arrested within hours, jewellery worth ₹10 lakh recovered

Siliguri, 30th December: Matigara police arrested a youth within hours after a theft incident at a vacant house and recovered stolen gold and silver jewellery worth around ₹10 lakh.

According to information, the incident took place in the Shiv Mandir’s Shantipur Haler Matha area when the house of Amit Jha was left vacant for some time on Monday afternoon. On returning home in the evening, the family discovered the theft and lodged a written complaint at Matigara police station.

Based on the complaint, plainclothes personnel from Matigara police station initiated an investigation. Police first examined CCTV footage from the surrounding area and identified the accused. Within six hours of the complaint, the police arrested the suspect.

The arrested accused has been identified as Abhijit Munda (19), alias Dharu, a resident of Dagapur. Following sustained interrogation, police recovered 70 grams of gold and 365 grams of silver ornaments buried underground in a forested area near Vishwas Colony. The recovered jewellery is estimated to be worth approximately ₹10 lakh.

The accused will be produced before the Siliguri court on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, complainant Amit Jha thanked the police for the swift recovery of the stolen items. He stated that his house was vacant for about one and a half hours, during which the theft was carried out by a youth engaged in scrap collection. Police have arrested the accused in connection with the case.
