Siliguri, 17th August: The Dabgram-Fulbari and Siliguri Joint Movement Committee has called for an Uttar Kanya Abhiyan on August 19, demanding protection of livelihood, housing and children’s rights.
According to the organisation, the procession will begin from the NJP ADRM office. The protesters will then proceed through Gate Bazar and Tin Batti More before reaching Uttar Kanya, where a memorandum will be submitted to administrative officials.
The organisation alleged that eviction notices issued by the Railways have put the livelihood of many ordinary residents at risk. It claimed that people were earlier served notices and called for hearings, but have now allegedly been issued direct eviction orders.
Against this backdrop, the organisation is demanding that evictions be stopped unless alternative rehabilitation arrangements are made. According to the committee, protecting the basic rights of ordinary residents is the main objective of the programme.
