Siliguri, 17th August: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) conducted a drive along Siliguri’s Sevoke Road from the area near Pranami Temple, led by Municipal Commissioner Bir Bikram Rai.
During the drive, several shops were found to have covered or blocked drains in front of their premises, disrupting the drainage system and causing waterlogging at various locations.
Municipal Commissioner Bir Bikram Rai said blocked drains can create stagnant water, providing a favourable environment for mosquito breeding and increasing the risk of diseases such as dengue. He stressed the importance of keeping drains clear.
He further warned that strict action would be taken against illegal encroachments and constructions carried out in violation of SMC rules. He specifically cautioned that operating businesses by blocking drains would not be tolerated.
According to the civic body, legal action may soon be initiated against those found violating the rules. Similar drives will continue in the coming days.
