Tanker owners and drivers blocked VIP Road in protest against ban on movement of tankers

Siliguri, 05th December: Frequent accidents have become a common problem among the residents near VIP Road and NJP due to the poor and dilapidated condition of the said road.

It is to be noted that a few days back a school student died in an accident on the VIP road. After the said incident, the administration promptly started to work on the repair of the road after getting a lot of backlash and protest from the locals. Many restrictions have also been imposed on the movement of heavy vehicles during morning and evening. The police administration also ordered a complete ban on the movement of oil tankers on VIP Road on Monday. After which the tanker owners and drivers expressed their anger. On Monday morning, they protested by blocking the movement of vehicles on VIP Road.

The protesters questioned the decision as to why particularly oil tankers and not other vehicles are restricted. They demanded that the rule should be equally applied to all vehicles. They further added that the road will remain blocked until the administration takes any effective measures.

On the other hand, NJP police reached the spot as soon as the information about the incident was received. After getting assurance from the police, the protesters removed the road blockade.
