SOG and Matigara police bust IPL betting racket in Siliguri, five arrested

Siliguri, 06th May: Special Operations Group (SOG) and the undercover cops of Matigara police station conducted a joint operation and exposed a betting racket involving the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. Significantly, five accused have also been arrested for operating online betting racket from a rented house in the city.


The arrested accused have been identified as Subroto Saha (36), Kankan Majumdar (35), Santu Das (34), Dilip Sah (36), and Nitai Dey (35), the mastermind behind the racket is stated to be a resident of Maynaguri.

As per reports, Nitai Dey arrived a few days prior, rented a house in Bhangapool area of Matigara, and set up the betting business. The betting on IPL matches was conducted through an app.


Acting on a tip-off late on Sunday night, the SOG and Matigara police conducted a joint operation inside the house in the said area and arrested the mastermind Nitai Dey along with his four associates. Additionally, the police also recovered 7 mobile phones, 5 ATM cards and Rs 11,600 in cash from the spot.

It is to be noted that the operation was the SOG’s first successful raid against IPL betting in the current year. Significantly, the SOG is actively engaged in exposing similar betting rackets operated within the city.

On Monday, all five accused have been presented before the Siliguri court, while the police are engaged in a detailed investigation of the matter.
