Snatching incident by fake police in Siliguri, probe intensifies as police close in on gang

Siliguri, 25th April: A shocking incident of snatching by miscreants posing as police has created panic in Siliguri’s Ward No. 09. More than 24 hours after the incident, the accused remain at large, but police have intensified the investigation and gathered several crucial leads.

According to police sources, four miscreants carried out the crime, arriving on two motorcycles, one of which is suspected to be an ‘Apache’. CCTV footage suggests that the bike used may have been stolen and fitted with a fake number plate. However, the faces of the accused are not clearly visible, making identification difficult.

During the incident, the miscreants reportedly spoke in Hindi, leading police to suspect that the gang may be from Jharkhand or Bihar. Links to the case have also reportedly emerged from the Matigara area.

It may be noted that around two to two-and-a-half months ago, Matigara police had arrested three members of a Jharkhand-based gang involved in similar crimes of impersonating police officers. They are currently lodged in a correctional home.

Police are now preparing to question those arrested individuals in connection with the present case. An application will be submitted at the Siliguri court on Monday, and upon receiving permission, interrogation will be conducted inside the correctional home.

Police suspect that the same gang may be involved in the Ward No. 09 incident. The investigation is currently progressing based on CCTV footage, the statement of the woman, and inputs from confidential sources.
